Florida school shooting spurs calls for action on gun control
The shooting rampage that killed 17 people last week at a Florida high school has many across the country and on Long Island calling for new gun control laws.
Among those pushing for action is Lois Schaffer, of Great Neck, who lost her daughter Suzie 9 years ago to gun violence.
"She walked into her house walked into her house interrupting a burglary -- shot her once and when she fell down, shot her twice more," she says.
Since then, she's been advocating for stricter gun regulation. Following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, she wants to see change.
"What we have to do is chip away at the gun lobby," she says.
Her sentiments echo that of a group of students in Florida who gathered at rallies over the weekend to make their voices heard.
Some of those students have vowed to become the face of a movement for tighter firearm regulations and plan to visit the Florida state capitol in Tallahassee this week to demand immediate action. They are also calling for anti-gun violence demonstrations in Washington and other cities on March 24.
In an announcement Sunday morning, organizers called it "The March for Our Lives."
Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
