Several schools on Long Island were dealing with perceived threats of violence in the wake of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.
As often happens after school shootings, police responded to a number of threats or perceived threats at schools across the Island, including Plainview–Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, Earl L Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson, Samoset Middle School in the Sachem district, Bellport High School and Freeport High School.
Suffolk police investigated the incidents in Sachem and Port Jefferson and found them to be non-criminal. A report of a hit list at Bellport High School was unfounded, Suffolk police say. Nassau police said the Freeport incident was a non-valid threat.
Students at Plainview–Old Bethpage JFK High School say a senior classmate posted alarming photos on her Instagram page. One photo shows the teen holding two handguns. It is captioned "you ain't messing wit no average chick pop pop" and a racist remark. The other shows her with a young man, who is also holding a handgun, with the caption "waiting for the moment it can be like this everyday."
Police are still investigating the Plainview situation, including where the girl got the guns in the photo.
