A massive bipartisan budget deal passed Congress early Friday, but without an immigration deal.
Immigration advocates say that they are frustrated that lawmakers failed to reach a solution for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The program allows those who were brought into the country illegally as children to live and work in the United States legally.
New Jersey grassroots groups say that they will be vocal in their support of DACA until the March 5 deadline when the program expires.
“What’s been really remarkable and incredible and inspiring is the commitment to the fight and we’ve gotten a lot of text messages and phone calls saying ‘I need time to regroup, but what’s next? What’s the plan? Let’s keep going,’” says Nedia Morsy with Make the Road New Jersey.
Federal lawmakers say that now that the budget deal passed, they are turning their focus to an immigration deal.
President Donald Trump commented about the budget deal on Twitter and said that America needs to elect more Republicans.
“Costs on non-military lines will never come down if we do not elect more Republicans in the 2018 Election, and beyond. This Bill is a BIG VICTORY for our Military, but much waste in order to get Dem votes. Fortunately, DACA not included in this Bill, negotiations to start now!” Trump said.
The president said that the lack of Republicans in Congress caused an increase of spending on “things we do not like or want in order to finally…take care of our military.”
