WC lawmakers introduce bill to permanently ban gun shows
A bill that would ban gun shows permanently from Westchester topped the agenda of a meeting among county legislators Monday in White Plains.
The Westchester County Board of Legislators introduced a bill at the meeting that would ban gun shows like the one held last year at the County Center in White Plains from ever happening again on county property.
At the beginning of the year, newly inducted County Executive George Latimer signed an executive order on his second day in office prohibiting gun shows from county property. That order could be overturned by a new county executive as soon as Latimer leaves office.
Monday's bill would make the ban law, regardless of who becomes executive. Gun shows could still be held on private property.
The bill was passed by the county Legislature last year, but it was vetoed by former County Executive Rob Astorino.
The bill is expected to go through this year, with Latimer, a Democrat, in office and the Board of Legislators, with a 12-5 Democratic majority.
While the County Center gun show has been popular, it's also been controversial, with Nazi and Confederate materials circulating at shows in past years.
Legislators say the gun show ban is part of an extensive agenda that also includes bills like the Immigrant Protection Act and Earned Sick Leave Act.
