Man charged in connection to Norwood rape case

Police say they've charged a man in connection with the rape of a 64-year-old woman in her Norwood apartment.
Unga Smith, 40, was taken to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit on Simpson Street for questioning on Wednesday. Police have since charged him with rape, robbery, burglary and criminal sex act -- all in the first degree. He is also charged with forcible compulsion.
Investigators say they believe Smith started stalking the victim around 6:30 p.m. Monday and followed her into her building near Dekalb Avenue and East Gun Hill Road. Authorities say he then pushed the woman inside her apartment, raped her and robbed her of $250.
News 12 is told that the victim uses a walker to get around. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Local businesses teamed up with the NYPD to track down the suspect. Many of them hung posters containing surveillance images in their store windows.
Police said Smith would be transferred from the Special Victims Unit to central booking.
