The flu virus has spread to 54 out of 62 counties across New York State, with 1,800 confirmed cases, according to the Health Department.

“The flu is here and it’s out there,” says Dr. Randy DiLorenzo, of Northwell at Syosset. “The best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu shot, wash your hands, and avoid people who have a fever or cough.”

News 12 Long Island has learned that as of this year, there is a mandate in New York that requires healthcare workers to wear a procedural mask if they have not been vaccinated against the flu.

Meanwhile, doctors say the vaccine is especially important for people at high risk of complications from flu, including children under 2 years old, pregnant women and adults over the age of 65.

Health officials say that flu season generally runs from October through May, often peaking in February.
