Brooklyn residents are preparing for some of the coldest temperatures so far this season.
NYC Emergency Management has posted some safety tips on its website for coping with the cold -- dress for the weather and don't forget to keep your head covered. That includes earlobes, noses and fingertips to prevent getting hypothermia and frostbite.
Another important thing to know is fire safety tips for your home. Make sure to only use portable heating equipment that is approved for indoor use. Always try to keep an eye on your heater, and never leave children alone while it's running.
Be careful not to overload electrical circuits, which could cause a fire.
The city also says if you happen to lose heat in your home or see someone in need of help outside, don't hesitate to call 311 or 911 for emergencies.
The middle of this week is expected to see high temperatures only around 32 degrees.
