New York City lawmakers are calling for a newly sworn-in firefighter to be terminated before his job even begins.
Joseph Cassano, the son of former FDNY Commissioner Sal Cassano, was forced to resign as an EMT in 2013 after expressing anti-Semitic and racist thoughts on Twitter.
The Daily News reported Cassano tweeted "I hate Jews about as much as Hitler #toofar? Nope" and "Getting sick of picking up all these Obama lovers and taking them to the hospital because their Medicare pays for an ambulance and not a cab."
"To now have this act of hiring someone who is anti-people-of-color and anti-women, and to have them on this job, is really a slap in the face," says Regina Wilson, president of the Vulcan Society, an organization that represents African-American firefighters.
Cassano reportedly sought counseling before returning as an EMT.
"No one else should be getting second chances when they have demonstrated that hatred and bigotry is in their heart. Lives get lost because of that kind of thinking," says Bronx Councilman Andy King.
