Hempstead Town Supervisor-elect Laura Gillen says current Supervisor Anthony Santino is trying to pull a fast one on the taxpayers before he leaves office at the end of the year.
Santino recently negotiated a proposed collective bargaining agreement amendment with the town's union workers that will be considered at Tuesday's Town Board meeting. Gillen called it a "scorched earth tactic" and "back room deal" designed to protect the jobs of Santino loyalists just before her administration comes into office in January.
"This amendment would be disastrous for Hempstead taxpayers who could be forced to continue to support the bloated political patronage that they rejected last month," said Gillen.
The amendment is subject to Town Board approval and the swing vote might be Democrat Dorothy Goosby – a member of Gillen's transition team. She is also one of Santino's staunchest allies.
Goosby told News 12 that she'll be unsure how she will vote until she analyzes the proposal.
News 12 obtained the proposed agreement, which reads in part, "No employee shall be terminated for reasons due to budgetary, economy, consolidation, abolition of functions, abolition of position or curtailment of activities, but may be terminated only for misconduct or incompetence."
A Santino spokesperson says it's designed to expand the protection of workers' rights.
