Police review bodycam footage after deadly shooting

Posted: Updated:
EAST TREMONT -

Police are reviewing body camera footage as part of their investigation into the deadly shooting of a stabbing suspect Monday night in the Bronx.

A makeshift memorial continues to grow at the corner of Hughes Avenue and East Tremont Street for Cornell Lockhart. The 67-year-old was shot several times by police at the Hughes House after he reportedly stabbed two female security guards in the lobby.

Those who knew Lockhart, a known neighborhood panhandler, are questioning why police did not use other means to defuse the situation.

Police ordered Lockhart, who lived at the halfway house since 2011, to drop the 4-inch steak knife he was holding. Officers fired when he did not comply and started to approach them.

Passers-by of the memorial said they were unsure of what led Lockhart to attack the two guards, who both survived their injuries. Some said there were previous disputes between him and the women in the past.

The shooting is being reviewed by the NYPD's Force Investigation Division, which handles cases in which a police weapon is drawn.
