A 19-year-old boxer from the Bronx has signed a pro contract with Floyd Mayweather.
Josue Vargas first came to the Bronx as a child from Puerto Rico at just 5 years old.
Vargas trains in Castle Hill, and he says his family struggled when he was growing up.
"Puerto Rico was not for us. We had to make a better living, and my mom wanted to live great, and make a beautiful family in New York," he says.
His trainer says he could see from the age of 8, Vargas was filled with raw talent.
But someone else saw that talent too.
In 2016, he signed a professional contract with undefeated boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather.
"Mayweather was like, 'you gotta spar one of my best fighters, Gervonta Davis.' So, we sparred, he saw me spar and he liked the way I did with Davis, and he said we gotta talk some business," Vargas says.
Since going pro at the age of 17, Vargas has complied nine victories and only one loss due to a disqualification.
The southpaw who fights in the lightweight and super lightweight divisions is training for his next fight in January.
