Guadagno hits campaign trail; Murphy sits out 1 week before Election Day

Republican gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno was hitting the campaign trail Tuesday, with only seven days left until Election Day. Democratic candidate Phil Murphy held no press events.
Guadagno met with local officials at the Scotch Plains municipal building and touted her property tax plan.
“We know this is going to be a low turnout election and we plan to get every single Republican and Independent and like-minded Democrat out [to vote],” Guadagno said.
Guadagno called for Murphy to declare where he stands on the 2 percent interest arbitration cap, which expires at the end of the year. The cap keeps police and fire salary increases from topping 2 percent and more dramatically raising property taxes.
The lieutenant governor says that she favors extending the cap. Murphy has declined to take a position on the issue.
“I ask you to demand answers from Phil Murphy before you go to the polls Tuesday,” Guadagno told voters. “And if you don’t get those answers you should not vote for Phil Murphy.”
Meanwhile Gov. Chris Christie disputed claims that his low approval rating is hurting Guadagno’s election chances. He says that it has been more than 50 years since either party won a third term in the governor's office.
The governor did not seem optimistic that Guadagno would win next week.
“If the [Lt. Gov. Guadagno] were to win, she would be swimming against the historical tide,” Christie said. “That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but that’s the fact.”
The latest Suffolk University poll finds that Murphy has a 16-point lead over Guadagno.
Murphy's campaign did not respond to News 12 New Jersey’s request for comment.
There are also five third-party candidates running in the race.
