Area surrounding Mott Haven sinkhole weakens

Residents in Mott Haven say nothing has been done about an expanding sinkhole that formed on East 134th Street and Alexander Avenue a week ago.
And now they say the area surrounding the sinkhole seems to be weakening as well.
Phaiza Padilla, who is nine months pregnant, says if it weren't for her neighbor telling her to watch out she would have stepped right into it. Other neighbors say they agree the sinkhole is an accident waiting to happen.
"It's dangerous," Padilla says. "A kid can fall in."
Crews from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection inspected the area Thursday and say there may be a leak in an underground pipe, which the agency believes is privately owned.
News 12 is told officials are waiting to gain access to the property owners to conduct further inspections.
