14 injured in 3-alarm Borough Park fire
At least 14 people were injured in a three-alarm fire at a Borough Park building Monday, officials say.
The fire started on the second floor of a four-story 49th Street building around 4:30 a.m.
Officials say four firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and that a woman is in critical condition after being trapped inside of her second-floor apartment during the fire. They say there was an iron gate that prevented rescuing her via the window.  News 12 has been told that a firefighter on the roof heard her screams and dispatched a team inside to save her.
Sam Stauber identified himself as the ex-husband of that 52-year-old victim. He says his ex-wife, Daniela, was unconscious when she was pulled from the apartment where the fire started. He said she is the mother of three and grandmother of six.
She is currently at Maimonides Medical Center.  Her family says they tried to move her to Jacobi Medical Center but couldn’t due to her condition.
Nine other people suffered minor injuries and are listed in stable condition.  Fire officials say those people got out safely by using fire escapes to climb to the roof. They were then taken down by firefighters. Witnesses say many of them were children.
At least 34 units and 138 firefighters responded to the blaze, and the fire was under control after 5:45 a.m.
