A man is accused of driving the wrong way while intoxicated on the Long Island Expressway in Nassau.

Police say a 911 caller reported a vehicle heading eastbound in the westbound lanes around 3 a.m. Sunday.

A highway patrol officer spotted the Mercedes-Benz near Exit 40, heading the wrong way in the HOV lane. Police say the driver then made a U-turn out of the HOV lane, crossing all lanes of traffic, before coming to a stop on the shoulder near Exit 44.

There were no accidents or injuries, police say.

The driver, identified as 46-year-old Jaime Rivas, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, had slurred speech and glassy, bloodshot eyes, according to police. He was taken into custody.

Rivas is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment.
