News 12 got an exclusive look Wednesday of the repurposing of 2800 Bruckner Blvd.
It will reopen in the next two weeks with offices to treat veterans with PTSD and children with autism, according to building management.
Tenants of the building were given an eviction notice last summer, and rumors surfaced that a shelter would come to the area. Residents then created a group called "Throgs Neck Strong" to represent their community to hold the landlord accountable.
The group had the landlord sign a letter of intent, in which the managing partner agreed to have an open dialogue regarding the wants and needs of the community.
"I believe that the landlord is showing intelligence and wants to work with us because of the rallies that occurred," says Throgs Neck Strong member Stephen Kauffman.
A building spokesperson said in a statement, "I, along with my team, have been working closely and transparently with this community and have met with local elected officials and community leaders to ensure that the building will provide programs that are safe, useful and diverse for the community."
The spokesperson says about 45 percent of the building is occupied by tenants under lease.
