Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with the Soundview assault of a 22-year-old woman that was captured on surveillance video.
Neighbor Juan Cespedes says he was about to fall asleep just before midnight last Friday when he heard a commotion outside that caused him to get out of bed and look out the window to see what was going on. A bang he heard turned out to be the sound of a suspect slamming Charlene Batista into her neighbor's car.
"I opened the blinds, opened the window and then I yelled, 'Hey!'" Cespedes says. "That's when I saw the guy on top of her and he ran."
His surveillance cameras recorded the whole incident. In the footage, the suspect is seen slowly creeping up to Batista, and then grabbing her around the neck, beginning to choke her.
The same day as the attack, a senior citizen was punched in the face on Gleason Avenue, around the corner from where Batista lives, after police say he refused to give his attackers cash.
Police have not made arrests in either case.
