Police say two officers were pepper-sprayed after a fight broke out Friday night at a vigil for the city’s 20th homicide victim this year.
Authorities say the confrontation began as crowds gathered for a vigil in memory of 19-year-old Eric Diaz, who was fatally shot in the stomach Thursday at Beardsley Street and Newfield Avenue in the city's East End.
The altercation erupted around 8:30 p.m., and state police were called in to help control the scene.
It was unclear whether any civilians were injured.
Police Chief AJ Perez says his heart goes out to Diaz's relatives and that he hopes people will turn their energies toward assisting them as they heal.
