One of incumbent Councilman Jumaane Williams’ biggest critics is now his primary opponent in the 45th City Council District.
Police relations is a hot topic in the district. Williams wants to limit instances where police can stop onlookers from recording officers. Another hot-button issue is affordable housing. Williams is pushing for mandatory inclusionary housing to reflect the area median income so low-income families can still afford to stay in the neighborhood. With the ongoing construction boom, Williams is calling for more required training for construction workers.
Lou Cespedes is challenging Williams. His education plan calls for more vocational STEM training for young women and more opportunities for charter administrations within what he calls failing public schools. To spur economic growth, Cespedes wants to create neighborhood alliances mirroring the economic development corporations that exist in other districts. Cespedes also wants to retain a mix of rent and ownership in the area and he wants to make it easier for homebuyers.
The district covers Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, Midwood and Canarsie.
