New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña says she has some advice for kids headed back to school.
She is in charge of over 1,600 schools, 1.1 million students and 70,000 teachers, but Faina is also a mom and grandma who knows a thing or two about how to make sure your child is prepared.
"Don't scare them, talk about all the wonderful things that are going to happen at school. Make sure they go to bed early, they probably won't sleep either and then when they go to school, if it's possible the first day, walk them to school," she says.
Farina even had a superintendent who emailed her saying she couldn't make a meeting because they were taking their son to high school.
She says if your child knows that you are leaving him in a place that you respect and that you think is a good place, then the child will too.
Another step for that first day, she says is to prepare dinner. "You want to hear from your child at the dinner table how their day went. There is no better parenting skill than listening." She says its not about what you make for dinner, it's about that interaction with your child.
