Affordable housing is now under construction on East 147th Street.

At the groundbreaking of the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on Friday, elected officials stressed that as the area booms, it is their job to ensure public land is still available to service their constituents.

Once completed, the plaza will have 167 units in total, with 67 of them for low-income tenants and 33 units for homeless families.

Applications for the units become available in the fall of 2018, with move-in slated for the following winter.
