Historians: Slave burial ground possibly in Gowanus
Historians say there is evidence that there may be a hidden slave burial ground in Gowanus.
Many believe the possible site lies on a fenced-off area along Ninth Street. If it truly is a burial ground, historians and community leaders say they want it protected.
There is talk of building a school on the site, but people in the area say they want the state to conduct a thorough investigation into what's underground before anything happens.
Historians say there's evidence, including a family diary, that former slaves were buried in the area.
News 12 reached out to the governor's office for comment, but has not heard back.
