A Bronx girl is accused of dumping scalding water on her friend during a sleepover.
Police say Jamoneisha Merritt, 11, was attending a sleepover at the Findlay Avenue home of Aniya Grant Stuart, 12, Wednesday when Stuart dumped boiling water on her while she was asleep.
Merritt, who goes by Jamone, suffered second-degree burns to her face and shoulders and was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where she continues to recover.
Stuart was charged with felony assault. Her mother, Shernett Panton, says her daughter was retaliating against Merritt, who earlier in the evening had poured cold water onto her daughter while she was asleep.
Panton says the two girls are friends and have spent the entire summer together and always prank each other. However, Panton says she does not know what her daughter was thinking when dumping boiling water on her friend.
Merritt's mother, Ebony, is calling for justice for her daughter, who she says is in good spirits in the hospital -- dancing and being her typically happy self.
Panton says her daughter attempted to hurt herself when the Administration for Children's Services came to the house. Stuart was taken to Montefiore Medical Center on suicide watch.
The case will be handled by family court. ACS is continuing to investigate.
