The next time you drink a nice cold beer, you could be helping to feed an animal at a Manorville ranch.

The nonprofit Double D Bar Ranch is taking part in the Brew to Moo program, which gives leftover grains from a microbrewery to the animals for free.  

The program was recently announced by the Town of Brookhaven. 

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine says the town will pick up used grain from the Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue and deliver it free to any farm operation to be used as feed. Romaine says the program will also help the town by not having tons of grain thrown away at its landfill.

For the brewery, it means about 1,400 pounds of grain a week that won't go to waste after it's used to brew beer.

Owners say that it costs about $130,000 a year between feed and hay, and with the program, costs will go down dramatically.

The ranch takes in abused or unwanted farm animals and houses about 365 animals including horses, chickens, ducks, peacocks, pot-bellied pigs, goats and sheep.

 The leftover grains are primarily barley and wheat, which is good for all of the farm animals to eat,except horses.
