Some tenants of an apartment building in Hunts Point are forming an alliance to bring awareness to the need for repairs seven months after a radiator explosion killed two toddlers there.
The incident at 720 Hunts Point Ave. prompted reaction from Mayor Bill de Blasio and other elected officials, but tenants say not much has changed in the building.
They hope uniting as a tenant association will bring changes, such as a fix to their constant elevator issues.
"It's scary to go into the elevator to be honest," says tenant Annie Martinez. "I open the door for the elevator and there was no elevator at all."
The Department of Buildings has issued 51 violations to the property. A majority of the active violations are in regards to the elevator issue.
Tenants hope building a tenant association will bring change, or at least more attention to their current living conditions.
