A 90-year-old driver was struck and killed by an oncoming NJ Transit train in Hazlet Saturday afternoon.
Authorities say the driver, identified as Albert Fuchs, of Hazlet, was attempting to go around the crossing gates at Bethany Road around 12:30 p.m. when he was hit by a New York-bound train on the North Jersey Coast Line.
The incident suspended service between Hazlet and Long Branch. No one was allowed off the train until 3:30 p.m.
NJ Transit says whether or not passengers are allowed off is up to the train supervisor. Customers were told to stay on the train due to the investigation. They were also told that it wasn't safe to walk on the tracks.
Service was restored on the NJCL line at 4:30 p.m.
