Verizon admitted this week that the personal information of 6 million customers was accidentally put online.
The company says that it does not believe that anything was stolen, but the cybersecurity company that found the problems say that it isn’t so sure.
Security experts say that data breaches like this are becoming unavoidable.
“You information is everywhere,” says Paige Hanson with the identify theft protection company Lifelock.
“The day you were born until now, the numbers of places you’ve given out your personal information is in the thousands,” she says.
Security experts say that there several things someone should do if they are the victim of a data breach.
First, determine how much information was stolen. Then update passwords or PINs and never use the same one twice.
Experts say they also want to remind people to reset any security questions associated with their accounts. Those questions can be used to reset accounts.
People who want more protection can consider a credit freeze, which won’t allow anyone to use a credit card until it is unfrozen.
