Surveillance video shows aftermath of NYPD officer ambush
Surveillance video from a nearby bodega shows a man running near where police say a gunman fatally shot an NYPD officer as she sat in a mobile command unit in Fordham Wednesday morning.
Police say Alexander Bonds, 34, assassinated Officer Miosotis Familia, 48. Other officers later shot Bonds to death in a shootout.
Police have not confirmed the contents of the video, but it shows a man fitting Bonds' description running from a group of officers shortly after the shooting and near the scene.
Familia's vehicle did not have bullet-resistant windows. Police say Bonds shot a single bullet from a revolver at near point-blank range into her head.
The NYPD says it plans to equip all of its vehicles with bullet-resistant doors and windows in the near future.
By Thursday, the NYPD had replaced Familia's mobile command center with another one, and community members set up a makeshift memorial for her in front of it.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce says Bonds' girlfriend made a 911 call in the hours before the incident, describing him as paranoid and erratic. Despite police efforts to track him down at that time, he went undetected until after he shot Familia.
On his Facebook page, Bonds had posted messages and videos ranting against police officers and describing his disdain for them. He had also served time in prison upstate, and News 12 has learned that just days before Familia's slaying, Bonds sought psychological treatment at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The hospital confirmed Bonds was treated and evaluated but could not go into specific details.
