Devils introduce top draft pick Nico Hischier
The New Jersey Devils held a news conference Monday to introduce their No. 1 NHL Draft pick Nico Hischier.
The 18-year-old from Switzerland answered questions alongside head coach John Hynes and general manager Ray Hero.
Hischier, a center, previously played for in the Canadian Hockey League on the Halifax Mooseheads. He scored 38 goals in 57 games last year. Hynes said that his newest player has the skills offensively and defensively to help the team. The Devils have not made it into the playoffs for the last five years.
Shero said that Hischier could play as early as next season.
“We have a spot for him. We’ll go from there,” Shero said. “I’m not about putting pressure on an 18-year-old kid.”
Hischier was humble at the introduction and said that he knows that he must earn his spot on the team.
“I know what I can do, but I’ve got to work hard for that,” he said.
The center says that he will head back to Switzerland before coming back to New Jersey for training camp. Contract talks are expected for later this summer.
