Weather update: Winter storm watch issued; flash freeze to follow snow

NORWALK -

News 12 meteorologists are tracking chances for two winter weather events as a winter storm watch goes into effect.

The National Weather Service issued the watch Thursday for Litchfield County ahead of the storm which is expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. A winter storm watch is not yet in effect for Fairfield County.

Thursday will see sunshine followed by increasing clouds with highs in the low 30s.

News 12 is also tracking the chance for a slippery start to Friday with snow or a wintry mix possibly starting overnight Thursday intro Friday morning. Snow is likely to begin before 10 a.m, then a chance of rain between 10 a.m. and noon. The snow will stop and it will become cloudy, then gradually become mostly sunny, with a high near 42 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow along the coast Friday could be just a coating but 2-4 inches of snow are possible further into northern Litchfield County. In addition to Friday's snow, a snowstorm will arrive Saturday night and last into Sunday with the chance for moderate to heavy snow.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy mixed rain and snow is possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations in excess of 7 inches over 12 hours and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch possible.

Rain is expected to mix in with the snow and could last until Monday morning when temperatures take a nose dive into the single digits.

In addition, minor to moderate coastal flooding will be possible Sunday. Dangerous wind chills are also possible Sunday night through Monday.

Monday's morning commute could be extremely icy as a result of rain which will freeze overnight but the forecast depends on the storm's exact track and intensity.
