NJ lawmakers take inspection tour of Hoboken Terminal 7 months after fatal train derailment
Three New Jersey lawmakers took a tour of the Hoboken Terminal Monday to see how repairs were going seven months after the fatal train derailment there.
Senate President Steve Sweeney, budget committee chairman Paul Sarlo and legislative oversight committee chairman Bob Gordon joined New Jersey Transit officials on the tour.
The repairs have been causing some overcrowding inside the station, as well as causing some confusion for passengers. Officials say that the reason repairs are taking so long is because the existing infrastructure is old and many parts needed for some repairs do not exist any longer.
The lawmakers say that it is time to start pushing money into New Jersey’s transit and transportation financial future.
“Amtrak’s been woefully underfunded. NJ Transit has been woefully underfunded. Mass transportation is one of the lifelines of the economy of this region, and it can’t be underfunded anymore,” said Sweeney.
Sweeney also said that Amtrak and NJ Transit should work together to find the funding to make repairs and upgrades.
Officials announced that all but one of the tracks inside the terminal will be open by the summer.
Last year’s train derailment killed one woman standing on the platform and injured more than 100 others.
