1 dead, 1 hospitalized in crash on East 233rd Street, Jerome Avenue in Woodlawn

One person is dead following a crash at East 233rd Street and Jerome Avenue in Woodlawn.

Police say a grey Toyota was going the wrong way on the entrance ramp to the Major Deegan Expressway at around 7 a.m. when it hit two vehicles. One of them was a dump truck operated by the city's Department of Transportation.

The medical examiner arrived shortly after the crash to remove the body of a 63-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the driver of the dump truck was taken to North Central Bronx Hospital.

The accident forced traffic to be directed near the on- and off-ramps of the Major Deegan, as well as a complete closure of East 233rd Street from Van Cortlandt Park East to the scene of the accident.
