Repairs coming to Van Cortlandt Park trailsPosted: Updated:
Van Cortlandt Park is getting a makeover that will cost $500,000.
Those who frequent the park say roots of trees stick out of the ground and make the trails hard to walk on, especially for the elderly.
The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park group has been fighting for years to get funding for repairs to the trail inside the park. Its members want the trails to have smoother surfaces and to be wheelchair accessible.
The group says it finally has $500,000 to spruce up the John Muir and John Kieran trails. The money was secured by Sen. Jeff Klein (D-The Bronx).
The renovations will take a long time to finish. Organizers say it could be a few years, but locals say it will be worth the wait.
Organizers hope to also add more signage on the trails and repair the stone stairs on the John Muir trail.
