What parents need to know as New York City public school students head back
The first day of class at New York City public schools is Thursday and News 12 has everything you need to know before your little ones head back.
Parents first need to make sure that their child is registered at their zone school, and should double check the start and end time at that location.
Parents are also encouraged to make transportation arrangements ahead of time. You'll want to check and see if your student is eligible for yellow bus service or a full-fare MetroCard.
All public school students are able to receive a free breakfast, and many others qualify for free lunch as well. Don't forget to notify the school if your child has any health problems or needs to take any medication.
Once school gets into full swing, there are ways to track your child's academic progress. Education officials say the easiest way is to get involved at the school. And to help families and faculty members communicate, the Department of Education provides information about students' education in more than 150 languages.
