Members of the Kingsbridge Historical Society oppose Van Cortlandt Park dog run
Local historians are upset with plans for a new dog run in Van Cortlandt Park.
Members of the Kingsbridge Historical Society say a dog run shouldn't be next to the Stockbridge Indian Massacre Memorial that honors Native Americans and their fight during the American Revolutionary War.
The Parks Department says 60 feet separate the memorial and the current dog site.
Plans are underway to build a new dog run where the existing one stands.
Historians say the dog park should be built further away from the tribute, as it is located in the middle of the monument and historical trail where dozens of Mochicans lost their lives in battle.
The Parks Department plans to plant shrubbery to act as a buffer between the two neighboring locations.
