Firefighters battle 4-alarm fire on Hill Avenue in Wakefield; 13 injured
A massive four-alarm fire left five families without their homes in Wakefield Wednesday afternoon.
It started at around 2 p.m. in a two-story residential building at 4523 Hill Ave., near East 241st Street. It ripped through a second home, leaving a total of 21 people displaced.
Officials say the fire started in the back of the house, though it is unclear at this time what caused it.
News 12 The Bronx has learned that 13 people, including 11 firefighters, suffered minor injuries. One of those firefighters was taken to a burn unit after suffering first-degree burns to his neck. Two civilians refused medical attention.
Division Chief Roberto Colon says the number of injuries reported is actually low considering the intensity and span of the fire.
The Red Cross was on hand, and called a city bus to transport the displaced tenants to temporary housing.
