Bronx politicians celebrated the passage of an anti-gun violence law today.
State Sen. Jeff Klein and a coalition of Bronx legislators and anti-gun supporters rejoiced at the passage of "Luisito's Law." The law is an initiative to toughen minimum sentencing requirements for anyone who fires a weapon near a playground or school.
The measure comes in the wake of a shooting that happened last year at Vadalia Park. Toddler Luis "Luisito" Oyola Jr. was caught in the crossfire of an argument at the park.
The day also marked the introduction of a second piece of legislation, "Nicholas' Law," which would require the safe storage of guns.
Many members of the surrounding community agree that tighter gun laws will make Bronx parks and streets safer for children.
