City unveils new program to fight crime

(01/09/03) SOUNDVIEW - Amid reports of proposed layoffs in the NYPD, the mayor and police commissioner announced the implementation of a citywide program geared towards lowering crime.

Operation Impact is a three-month long program that places more cops in high crime areas. In the Bronx, patrol areas include Soundview, Fordham, Mott Haven, Grand Concourse and Yankee Stadium.

Although crime in the city has gone down in recent years, the Bronx had the highest murder rate in the city in 2002. So, for Bronx residents Operation Impact is good news. Residents say they hope that a larger police presence in the area will improve their quality of life.
