Senators oppose mayor's education plan

(01/29/03) MORRIS PARK - Mayor Bloomberg's (R-NY) plan to redesign the city's school districts is being met with opposition. Five state Senators say the mayor is overstepping his power.

One of the opponents is Senator Guy Velella (R-Bronx). He says the mayor does not have the authority to switch from a 32 school district system to a 10 school district system. Velella also added that the mayor cannot redraw district lines.

But according to a spokesperson, the mayor is not redrawing district lines. He is simply consolidating.

Velella says ultimately the decision to change the districts must be approved by Albany.
