Teen dies in Hunts Point fire
(07/13/03) HUNTS POINT - An early Sunday morning fire in Hunts Point took the life of a teenager and left two families homeless.
Neighbors say the fire tore through the Manida Street house quickly, engulfing the building in about ten minutes. Fire officials were able to get the blaze under control in less than an hour but not quickly enough to save one 18-year-old boy. Everyone else was able to get out of the house. Three people were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for smoke inhalation. Three firemen also suffered minor injuries.
Fire officials say the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
The Red Cross was at the scene and will help the displaced families find a temporary home.
