Failing grades for Bronx supermarkets

(07/13/03) THE BRONX - Dozens of Bronx supermarkets are getting a failing grade, when it comes to handling their meat, fruit and vegetables. The state says nearly 30 supermarkets in the southeast Bronx are not doing their job correctly.

The Food Bazaar in Concourse Plaza is one of the stores with failing stores. The list of violations is long. They include:mice droppingsstale meatblood dripping encrusted meat on the deli slicerclothing in the food processor

The state says they found some improvement went they went back to check on the supermarket, but mice droppings were still present.

Bronx Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-District 16) is encouraging Bronx residents to report supermarkets, so storeowners can be more accountable.

The store manager for the food-bazaar supermarket says their doing their best to improve their sanitary conditions. The store has hired an exterminator to take care of the rodent problem.
