BX found to have worst subway phones
(07/15/03) HUNTS POINT - Dirty and non-functioning pay phones in city subway stations is a common complaint. Now, a report released by the Public Advocate finds the problem is real and is the worst in the Bronx.
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum says she found that in the Bronx most of the pay phones had no dial tone. She says in the Bronx and the rest of the city, many phones would not accept change because the slot was blocked and in some cases the phone wouldn't give back the quarter if it wasn't used.
Despite getting a bad rap for having the most non-working phones, the Bronx scored highest for having the cleanest phones.
Verizon says subway phones are in the poorest condition, but says most times it is unaware if a phone is broken unless someone calls to complain. The company says if a phone is broken, they try to fix it within 24 hours.
