Pueblo de Mayaguez complex for sale

(07/16/03) MELROSE - Tenants living in the Pueblo de Mayaguez complex fear that if their building is sold they may have to pay more for rent or move out.

HUD, the federal agency that owns the building, will be holding an auction next week to sell the complex.

Residents say the building was bid on back in December but the buyer backed out of the deal. Knowing the building is kept in great condition the tenants say buyers will not be hard to find, which makes them very concerned that their luck will run out.

So, some of the tenants have filed a petition to have the building changed into a co-op. They say this will allow them to stay in the building and give them more control. But HUD says the tenants must also put a bid on the building.

Tenants say they plan to protest next week.
