Verizon workers rally at Yankee Stadium

(07/17/03) THE BRONX - Verizon workers are rallying at Yankee Stadium Thursday in an effort to have their demands for a new contract heard.

Workers say they are prepared to walk off the job if a new contract deal is not reached by August 2. Union officials say the main issues holding up a new deal are health benefits, job security and absentee policies.

Meanwhile, negotiations between Verizon and union representatives continue in Westchester.

Verizon workers walked off the job in 1989, 1996, and 2000. During the last Verizon strike, more than 80,000 employees in 12 states along the eastern seaboard walked off the job.

In preparation for a possible strike, Verizon is staggering its repair orders in the Bronx and the rest of the city. Repair requests may take anywhere from five days to two weeks to be completed.
