BX teen crowned soap box derby champ

(7/17/03) CASTLE HILL - A soap box cart and beginners luck are what 13-year-old Arlene Marrero says helped lead her to victory in the New York Regional Soap Box Derby Competition.

Friends and family came out to cheer on Marrero, who was victorious despite losing a few pieces of her cart during the race. Marrero's father says he is very proud.

Marrero was presented with a Tony Stewart Racing jacket and a cake to celebrate her victory. She says without help from her family and friends, and Home Depot she wouldn't have made it so far.

Next on the derby circuit, Marrero heads to the National Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio where she will compete against more than 400 kids for scholarships.
