Parkchester residents push for traffic light
(07/19/03) PARKCHESTER - Some people who live near a Busy Bronx intersection are requesting that the city install a traffic light before it's too late. Residents who live in the Parkchester condos say the intersection of Dogwood Drive and East Tremont Avenue is one of the most dangerous in the Bronx.
They say cars crowd the sidewalks, making it difficult for drivers to get a clear view when they pull out. Residents claim there have been at least 13 accidents already this year because people on East Tremont just drive too fast.
Residents held a rally Saturday to gather signatures for a petition asking the city to install a traffic light. They say they collected nearly 300 signatures in less than an hour, including one from congressman Joseph Crowley (D-7th District). They say their goal is to have a strong case when they make a formal request to the Department of Transportation.
Residents say later this week they will present their petition to Mayor Bloomberg and ask for an immediate review to see if a traffic light is needed.
