Several injured in Townsend Ave. fire

(07/19/03) THE BRONX - Fire officials are investigating a two-alarm fire on Townsend Avenue and East 171 Street. Officials say several people are being treated for severe injuries, including children.

Fire officials say the blaze started on the third floor of a six-story building at around 9 a.m. Saturday. Officials say a total of 17 people were injured in the blaze, including two children and a 5-month-old girl.

Firefighters say one of the reasons why the fire spread so quickly is because the fire doors that are suppose to always be shut, were left open. Firefighters say they've issued a violation notice to the building's owner.

Officials say the blaze began when a couch lying in a hallway caught fire. They're investigating if the couch was intentionally set on fire.
