Bronx Dominicans celebrate heritage

(07/20/03) THE BRONX - Thousands of Bronx residents lined up on the Grand Concourse to celebrate the 14th annual Dominican Day Parade. Residents got a good look at the floats and costumes that passed by as they danced to a variety of music.

The festivities got underway with Bronx Borough President Adolpho Carrion Jr. awarding some high-achieving Bronx college students. After that, the party began as the star of this year's parade was Miss Universe for 2003, Dominican-born Amelia Vega.

Organizers say the parade is a way for the Bronx to honor its large Dominican population. From 1990 to 2000, the Dominican population in the Bronx grew faster than in any other borough.

Despite the high heat and large crowds, police say theyencountered no major injuries or disturbances.
