Bronx kids get to know NYC's finest

(07/29/03) THE BRONX - Men and women wearing uniforms and badges and carrying guns can be very intimidating for young children. That's why the NYPD hosts an annual picnic to get to know youngsters in each of the boroughs.

Children from all over the Bronx attended the Harmony Day Picnic and had a blast. The kids played volleyball with the officers, played games and participated in relay races.

The event began in Brooklyn more than a decade ago as a way to mend the relationship between the police and the community. Police say it's important to make a good impression on the youngsters in each borough.

The NYPD knows that a yearly picnic is not the way to solve any future problems but believe it's the first step in a positive direction.
