Co-op City in a parking jam
(07/31/03) CO-OP CITY - The heat is on for Co-op City management and local officials to find parking for residents since four parking garages are slated to close over the next few days.
The 1, 3, 4 and 8 garages are closing down because they are structurally unsafe. Engineers say the garages are in danger of collapsing if not fixed. Garage 6 has already shut down due to unsafe conditions. With five garages out of commission, some 7,000 drivers will have to find alternate parking.
Riverbay, the company that manages Co-op City, and local officials are scrambling to find a solution to the potential parking crisis. Two temporary solutions reached so far are to have drivers park in a green area of the property and to park at an angle to the curb on Co-op City Boulevard. The only problem is that either remedy only accomodates about 2,000 cars.
